The birth of an IDEA!

While in the fortunate position of mentoring a Student Teacher from Dominican University (River Forest, IL), let's call her Ms. C, I formulated the idea to take the Empty Bowls project from the fall semester Ceramics 2 classes and spread it to the entire Ceramics curricula. The birth of the project ensued and is now in it's infant state.
The Ceramics I classes will be the guinea pigs for the first run of the Empty Bowls project incorporating the blogging feature. Let's see where we can take this shall we?!?!

How did we get here??

The Proviso West High School Ceramics program in Hillside, IL is now going global with their art. We have signed on to be a part of the Empty Bowls project which is spreading across this great nation and soon will be worldwide!!!!
It all started with an art teacher who decided to take a charitable stand against hunger with his students. They decided to make ceramic bowls and host a soup and bread dinner to raise funds. Such a simple plan, but look closely and see the deeper meaning. Supporters get a bowl of soup and when they are done they have a bowl, an empty bowl which represents the end of a meal and the possibility of not another meal, as it is around this nation and across the world. That art form is a message, a message of what is lacking in our world, food for everyone.
So with a clear message and a plan to battle the problem, he started a movement. Ceramic artist's from all over now host these dinners and the money raised goes to feed the local hungry. Here at PWHS, we have been fortunate work with David Toan, who has established a partnership with the LaGrange Business Bureau to host an event second to none. In November 2008, Terra Incognito Studios in LaGrange with the LBB, organized 17 local restaurants to give away food to the bearers of bowls, and brokered the sale of over 400 bowls. The event was amazing and the profits benefitted two local soup kitchens that feed the local hungry. The 2010 event will be even bigger with 22 local restaurants participating and even more bowls being created for the event. For 2010 there will be three local soup kitchens benefitting from the event.
